Mercury (Hg) pollution from human activities, such a burning fossil fuels, waste incineration, mining, etc., becomes airborne and then settles into terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems where bacteria reacts with water, soil, or plants to form Methylmercury (MeHg). In marine ecosystems, Mercury is converted into Methylmercury which bioacculmulates in the food web and up into top predators such as humans and polar bears.
